Today I had the privilege of hosting some students from River Valley High School (@rivervalleysg) at our office as part of their social investigation project. The school gives them time off to interview people from all walks of life , in order for the students to gain actual perspectives.
The students were eloquent, confident and they are willing to assert their opinions and questions bravely. They were so curious and wanted to know everything ! They asked me about my journey as an entrepreneur and the reasons behind my #success.
This question took me by surprise because I have never thought of myself as a success.
I know that I hustle and work hard everyday, giving every ounce of my strength to my customers, the business, my employees and my family. I know that I put in effort to be the best version that I can be , the best Audrey that can ever exist in my lifetime.
I asked them why they thought of me as a success, and what defines success ? They explain that they define success as the market recognising a good product, the acknowledgement it gets from consumers and the media validating these sentiments.
After taking a moment to think , I explained that I understand their point of view and could see the logic behind their conclusion. My reply to them was to redefine success , shifting it from external factors to something more internal. To me , success is not validation, it is : “#Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
A lot of journeys that I’ve undertaken on in my life was due to me being the best that I could possibly be.
The leap of faith that I took when I moved to China in 2012 , the transition of our business from hawker into a food manufacturing plant in 2017 , the development of the world’s first #youtiaochips in 2019 - they were all the result of being true to myself.
In retrospect , I now see that fate sent people into my life to help me to achieve my goals and to get me from one stage into another stage. Because I was always true to myself and my cause, I express myself in an authentic manner with no agenda. I attract like minded individuals who share my vision, and these people put themselves on the line to support and take us from place to place.
In this new year of 2020, I would like to ask you to consider what does “#Success” mean to you ?
